In a month, on July 13 and 14, the 9th and 10th stages of the European Cup organized by the European Cycling Union (UEC) will be held at the Maris Strombergs BMX track “Valmiera”. It is expected that the strongest domestic and foreign athletes in the elite, U-23 and junior classes will take part, as well as the best drivers in 22 Challenge categories will be determined. Entry to the competition will be free for spectators.
Cycling competitions of this scale will take place in Valmiera for the third year in a row, and next summer Latvia will be entrusted with hosting the European Championship for the second time, choosing the Valmiera BMX track as the venue, which has been the official Northern European center of this sport since 2022.
Artis Ozols, executive director of the Latvian Cycling Federation:
“Repeated granting of the right to host European Cup stages to Latvia is undeniably a confirmation of the UEC’s trust in us as organizers, and a good signal to foreign athletes about the quality we are able to provide in Valmiera, Latvia. At the same time, holding international competitions of this scale is a great opportunity for our own drivers to gain more experience here, at home, which is especially important for the younger generation of athletes and their parents.”
Kristens Krigers, Latvia’s best elite athlete, has already confirmed his participation in this year’s European Cup competition in Valmiera, who has also received approval for participation in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, which will be held in the French capital from July 26 to August 11.
“Of course, the proximity of the Olympics will directly affect the composition of the participants in the European Cup, but I would like to emphasize that only 12 Europeans have qualified for it, therefore I am sure that there will be considerable competition in the elite competition in Valmiera,”
said Krigers, confirming that the European Cup stage the competition at home will be the last stage of preparation for the most important start of the career – the Olympic Games.
