Valmiera gears up to host the 2025 UEC BMX Racing European Championships

This summer, Latvia’s BMX capital will once again take the European spotlight – Valmiera will host the 2025 UEC BMX Racing European Championships. From 10 to 13 July, the world-class BMX track in Valmiera, named after the first and only double Olympic BMX Champion Māris Štrombergs, will welcome elite, junior, and amateur riders from across Europe for an intense display of speed and skill.

This major sporting event is organized by the Latvian Cycling Federation (LRF) in cooperation with the Union Européenne de Cyclisme (UEC), Valmiera Municipality, the Māris Štrombergs Agency / BMX Club “Valmiera,” and the Valmiera Olympic Centre. The championships will unite Europe’s top athletes in a battle for the prestigious European Champion title and the iconic UEC jersey.

“Valmiera has a rich BMX history that dates back nearly 40 years. In 2019, when the European Championships were held in Valmiera for the first time, the event attracted 1,060 participants from 26 countries. LRF conducted an independent study confirming the positive impact of this event on the national and regional economy and visibility.

We now have all the conditions to go even bigger this year – from the organizers’ commitment and a world-class venue to a professional team and a supportive, welcoming local community,” says Artis Ozols, Executive Director of the Latvian Cycling Federation.

“Over the years, Valmiera has established itself as a key development hub for European BMX. Hosting the event again proves that all involved partners are capable of delivering a high-quality championship, valued not only nationally, but also at the European and global level.

The event contributes economically to the region and Latvia, and has long-term benefits for Valmiera’s and the country’s visibility as a destination for training, competition, and tourism. It’s also a great opportunity for Latvia’s future champions to grow and experience international competition at home,” explains Jānis Baiks, Chairman of Valmiera Municipality Council.

The Māris Štrombergs BMX Track “Valmiera” spans 330 meters and features two start hills (8m and 5m) and three start gates (8m, 5m, and 3m), offering a technically demanding and visually impressive course for both elite riders and rising stars.

“With our Olympic-level facility and experienced team, we’re ready to deliver an unforgettable experience for athletes, fans, and the whole BMX community,” says Ingrīda Upīte, Race Director of the 2025 Championships.

Latvia holds a special place on the global BMX map thanks to Māris Štrombergs’ extraordinary achievements – he was the first Olympic BMX Champion in history (Beijing 2008) and the only rider to defend the title, winning again in London 2012.

“Seeing the European Championships in my hometown means a lot to me,” says Māris Štrombergs. “Valmiera is where my BMX journey began, and now a new generation is writing their own stories here. I’m excited to see Europe’s best athletes on this amazing track, and to reconnect with friends and people who’ve been part of my journey in the sport.”

Spectators can expect a true festival atmosphere – fan zones, entertainment, local food and drinks, and the chance to meet stars of the sport, including Māris Štrombergs himself.

Registration for the 2025 UEC BMX European Championships will be open from 26 May to 23 June. Athletes, teams, and federations are encouraged to register early via the official UEC registration platform to secure their spot at one of the biggest BMX events of the year.
